Transitions

The last few weeks have been full of transitions....back to work, back to daycare, new routines, new struggles.

Work has been hard--my kiddos learned a lot of bad habits while I was gone and I've got some pretty severe behavior problems to fix.  On top of being behind curriculum and learning-wise....it's been hard to play catch-up.  I also found out that one of my co-workers has breast cancer.  So...work has been a lot of work.  I'm exhausted by the time I get home....from working all day long after a night of interrupted sleep (she's up at least once a night).

LM is struggling in daycare.  It's been hard for him to get back into the routine of daycare...especially with having to share her with his baby.  He's been aggressive again..hitting, scratching, kicking.  And, not listening...a lot.  He was struggling with napping (she was trying to get him to lay on a mat for naptime so PS could use the pnp--not that she naps in it anyway!) and we had one horrible blow-up day last week where she spanked him (apparently it was a swat more than anything) but it got pretty ugly between us.  We have arrived at an ok place right now but this is my final incident with her. If anything else comes up, I'm done.  I know she's really frustrated with his behavior...but he's not even two yet and just doesn't get it yet.  He will learn and he will get it..but it will take time. Sometimes I think his verbal skills make people (us included) assume that he understands/processes more than he can.  I'm hoping that he'll get into the routine again and be ok.  But, I'm looking into new places just in case.  Beyond that, he's doing great--singing, dancing, talking up a storm! I can't believe he's almost two!!!

PS added to the stress of the week by having a new breakout of hives that got progressively worse as the week went on.  So, to throw a big transition in---I'm stopped breastfeeding entirely.  Obviously, there is more that she's allergic to and I can't eliminate everything from my diet. I also couldn't continue to deal emotionally with the idea that I'm hurting her with what I eat...without knowing.  So, I ended that chapter of my life.  It's been highly emotional for me (not to mention painful as the not feeding engorgement set in) but I'm trying to make the best out of it.  I know that it'll be better for her to have a controlled diet that we can help her feel better with.  Today I'm having a glass of wine without having to time it around feeds and see the positive in it. We ended up at the pediatrician's office on Friday to have her looked at.  She confirmed that it's not a contact rash but a classic "food" related rash. She wants us to go back to the hypoallergenic formula (as you remember--she hated it the first time and REFUSED to drink anything out of a bottle for awhile so we went for soy to see if she'd take it).  She wasn't sure if it was a reaction to the soy that had been building in her system or something else (corn maybe?).  We're weaning her off the soy by mixing the two formulas until she'll take the hypo one.  She's been doing okay with it so far.  Of course, I'm sure I just jinxed us! We go back to the pedi allergist in June unless she continues with hives after being on the hypo formula full time for awhile.  We also have steroid cream for her body and a liquid for her head (yup--it's there too) to get the hives/rash to go away before it harms her skin---it's seriously bad looking folks.  I'm hoping that once we get it cleared and on the new formula, it'll make a difference in how she feels.  What I'm not looking forward to though, is the cost of it.  Retail, we're looking at 35$ every 5 days...and she only takes 4oz bottles right now.  When I'm done with this, I'm going to be doing some research on buying through Ebay, CL etc.

It's been a lot lately. I feel like I'm unraveling emotionally...but just don't have time to actually do it.  I'm sub-par at a lot of things...and great at nothing.  I just want to be good at something...I don't need great yet.  Oh, and I'd like someone to come wash my bottles every night :-)

One month today (already!)

PS today you are one month old. I can't believe that we are already at a "milestone".  The last month has flown by.  It seems like just yesterday we were headed to the hospital to have you.

You cry...a lot. And so do I. But, we're learning how to move along through the day.

You like to eat, though you're learning how to stretch it out (at least at night) from the near constant feedings you did at the beginning. During the day you eat every 2-3 hours (unless you are taking a monster nap) and usually start off the night with a good 3-4 hour stretch followed up with 2-3 hours again.  You're not committed to a long feed...you either eat fast and furious or snack a bit and fall asleep. But, you appear to be growing (or I'm just shrinking your newborn sized clothes from all of the washings) so it's all good :-)

You are trying to life your head up and move it side to side. We'll start more tummy time soon but you are already trying to move your body. You like to pull your arms/upper body so you roll on your side a bit--you love sleeping that way but only get to when we're watching closely. I wish I could trust that you'd be safe that way and not roll onto your face...because I'm sure that you'd sleep better that way!

You're starting to have longer alert stretches where you stare at us like we're a weird marvel. You like looking at the flowers/butterflies on the wall above your changing table and the mirror on your swing mobile. I'm not sure how much you actually see of everything, but you're starting to like looking. Sometimes these alert stretches keep you up from taking a nap at the right time and you get overtired, becoming our Princess Fussypants. We're working on how to figure out this nap thing...since we didn't quite get it right the first time around!!

You have a temper and let it be known when you're not happy. It's a new experience and a harder one than I expected. We thought that since we "knew" what we were doing this time, it would be "easier".  Haha! We hope the crying thing dies down soon.

You have baby acne to put all other babies to shame. We're hoping it's not an indicator of your teenage years! You also spit up enough to put your brother to shame...and he was pretty darn impressive.  We're hoping that you'll outgrow it sooner since you seem to have better neck/body control than he did. Here's hoping!!

You are, however, amazing. You're tiny and delicate. You have a beautiful little half smile and giggle that show up in your sleep. You look just like your brother did at this age...and when you wear his hand me down jammies, it's deja vu. You love snuggling up to your daddy and are big into burrowing close to us to sleep. This makes it hard to put you down...but I miss when your brother used to do this so I'm not rushing anything.

You've changed so much in the last month. I promise to do a better job of taking your picture and video-ing you this month...no "second child" syndrome for you. I can't wait to see who you'll be in another month.

How we're faring

Sorry that it's been so long since I updated last (though, the birth story really doesn't count as an update I suppose).  Things are chugging along here...every day seems like a bit of a blur but I suppose when you operate your day in 2-4 hour chunks, time probably passes in a different way than you expect.

I have found that I obviously blocked out the first few weeks of LM's life...or maybe the fog of sleep deprivation made it disappear instead! Every day is a series of steps...feed, diaper, attempt to get her to nap, repeat etc...squeezing in an occasional shower.  She is a fairly good sleeper--napping about 2-3 hours at a time when she naps.  With the exception of a few nights, she sleeps about the same at night, though usually closer to 2 hours a time. We were lucky enough last night to get a five hour stretch....I was so awake after feeding her that I didn't know what to do! No worries though...I went back to sleep :-)  She oscillates between eating like she's in a race and snacking/snoozing her way through a feed--though, unless it happens to be one of the rare times she eats slow and steady for 15min+, she seems to sleep the same regardless.

She joins her brother in the Spit-Up Club. I had hoped we wouldn't have a repeat of this and the sour smelling, wet clothes (both mine and hers!), the piles of soaked burp clothes and fear of projectile spit-up down visitor's cleavage (totally happened!).  But--she started even earlier! I haven't started eliminating things from my diet to see if it helps--it never did with LM and my eating/drinking has been so inconsistent in subject matter, I'm not seeing any correlations.  We'll see how she's doing at her 1 month appt next week and maybe reassess after that.

The biggest issue (and I'll touch more on it later in a future post) is temperament. Whereas LM cried when he needed something and then was done...PS just cries. She cries when she wakes up (silent to 60mph, full force), she cries in the evening, she cries when she's hungry, when she burps or spits up a lot, she cries if we stop bouncing her...she just cries. Now this isn't to say that she isn't ever happy...we're developing more and more alert time..she's just so much more high maintenance than LM. It's my fault mostly because while pregnant, I just kept telling myself that I just needed her to be a better sleeper than LM--that I just couldn't go 15mo until she STTN...now I know you need to be more specific when speaking to babies in utero.  It's basically been really hard to adjust to her constant need to be soothed. Really hard.

Helping LM adjust has been hard too.  For the most part, he's still getting lots of attention (TH is still on paternity leave) from both of us. He's learned to take TH  a book to read instead of just assuming that I can do it. Before, he never wanted him to read to him...it ALWAYS had to be me. So, it's nice they can share in it too. But, he's starting getting really upset at bedtime...crying and throwing fits instead of reading and laying right now (it makes me cry too). He's also started biting again at daycare (he's been going a couple days a week). Just little things that are starting to add up...and keep me up at night (haha, I get the irony of that statement).

PS is up...so I'm done here for now.

Home Again, Home Again

Today is Day 2 of my maternity leave (the two weeks prior to EDD that my OB wanted me to take in case I go all super swollen, sponge.bob-square-feet again. Yesterday I was super productive--ran errands, did laundry, hung up LM's clothes for the next size up, cleaned up the kitchen etc.

Today...well...its rainy and I'm sleepy so I've done a little here and there around the house. It's going to be hard to not fall into a pattern of laziness. I'm feeling ok...PS is all up in my rib cage so I only feel comfortable in certain positions. Maybe she'll be long since she's apparently super low and dropped too. I've been battling swelling when I eat anything with a slightly more than normal amount of sodium. Friday we did Chinese food for a farewell lunch at work and then we went to my SIL's house for tacos that night...I could feel my ankles all tight and swollen with even a little movement. So, I'm trying to be careful.

LM is still in the dark about what's happening. He can tell you where "the baby " is--he pats my stomach and he says "baby" when he sees the infant carseat next to his (two carseats squished in my backseat...talk about an overwhelming moment!!). But--cute little thing has no clue. He's been super snuggles lately but I'm not sure if that's because he's just in the mood for that or if he senses something. I'm more nervous about him being away from us for two days (my mom is staying at our house with him) than I am about the whole giving birth again thing. I'll miss him so much and I'd hate for him to be off his routine and out of sorts, only to have us add to the mix when we come home. Anyone have any baby transition tips???

I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow...it'll be interesting to see how things are progressing. I was up to 2cm last week. That's where I hung around with LM until my water broke at 3cm (hit 2cm about the same time). I'm anxious to get things going but I also want to wait as long as possible.

That's about all here...the exciting stuff happens in the next couple of weeks I suppose.

Paranoia

The last few days, I've been walking around as a super fun nesting, paranoid lady. Well, scratch that part, I'm not nesting at home but rather at school. I went on a cleaning/organizing binge in my classroom--creating all sorts of tasks for myself to work on instead of the multitude I still need to accomplish in the next 3.25 weeks. My house...now it's a mess. LM is waaayy into "cleaning" with his tiny play kitchen rags, so I'm thinking about just giving him some pledge and letting him have at my bookshelves. It may be the only way it's happening around here :-)

Ladies in my October Due Date group are starting to have babies...granted, it's mostly twins and the singlets that were high-risk or have become high-risk. But, coupled with the excruciating back pain today with every step I take and let's just say...some digestive issues tonight that reminded me of the "cleansing of the body" that took place during labor.....well, I just get paranoid that I'm not baking as well as I think.  I don't go back to the doctor until next Friday (my last every two week visit) and I'm excited (yeah, weird, I know) for my first cervical check. I NEED.TO.KNOW where I'm at. I pretty much don't even notice the BHicks anymore, they happen that often. Last time, at my first cervical check I was a fingertip dilated and by the next week, I was 2cm--which started the "maybe it's time to stop work conversation (that and the giant swollen sponge.bob squarefeet action).

I'm over-thinking this all...and rambling.

Perhaps it's that I STILL don't have a sub (though my Principal swears she's interviewing). Perhaps it's that I seem to by lacking the motivation to finish the sub plans I need to leave for the first two weeks (I'm 75% done with one week), despite the fact that the last two weekends, that's been my goal. It's just so tedious to type out each and every detail about each and every day for my little ones. But, like I said, the nesting at school is helping me at least get my room ready. I suppose I could always finish my plans while in labor :-)

Or maybe it's just that I'm scared. Scared of the birth process again...it was "too smooth" last time. Surely, it won't be as straightforward, short and "well-timed". I'm also scared of how it will change our family---LM has been acting out at daycare when she's been having to take care of the 3mo old baby. He's such a mama/daddy boy...I feel awful for changing his world so much when he has no idea what to expect. I'm scared that I won't be able to pick him up much longer without hurting myself. I'm also scared that I won't be good enough as a mom to 2. I barely scrape by as a wife...and I've been having incredible guilt at the things TH has had to take over to help me out at this point (though, I know he's trying to just give me a break). But, I'm already not a cook, cleaning isn't my priority (though I'm tidy and pickup after myself, I just don't like to spend time cleaning cleaning on the weekends) and I'm not the organized, pinterest type of wife. I want to be...I'm just not. And I worry that it's going to get worse. And that it will affect my marriage. I realize I should stop worrying...especially when I read posts and blogs about moms to be and how they kept calm and worry-free and how it's making their babies better ("than mine" the fine print screams at me). PS is going to come out with a ticky-eye like I've developed and afraid of talking out and having to turn her behavior card :-)

To end on a positive note (not that anyone is still reading past this yammering), we do have a name! MIL HATES it, but what's new? And, baby-wise, we really only have to install the carseat(s), bring up the swing and we can survive her arrival. AND--I'm huge. None of my maternity clothes fit right anymore but apparently, that just makes people comment on how nice I look (or perhaps that's the crazed look in my eyes that frightens the compliment out of them!) which makes me feel better.

LM is 18 months today....A YEAR and a friggin HALF. Holy Moly. I'm 34+3days pregnant and still looking for a cute way to share it on FB!

17 months old today!

LM is 17mo today....how the heck did that happen?? We're also 10 weeks from meeting his still unnamed little sister.

Seventeen months is an age that is both amazing and makes me want to pull my hair out. Or perhaps that's just my 17 month old! We started back to school last week so it's a time of changes again around here. We were utterly spoiled to both be lucky enough to spend all summer home with LM. The changes daily in him were amazing to be a part of.

Here's a "snapshot" of where LM is today.
Food: He loves to eat just about anything we eat or he can get his hands on. Fruit is still his favorite (strawberries and bananas especially). He has developed a soft spot for hot dogs and chicken nuggets but will eat almost anything--including spicy things like jalapeno chips and salsa. He drinks his whole milk like it's nobody's business. We've finally graduated to him being willing to drink out of any of his sippy cups (and we have quite a few for him to choose from!). He likes his water out of a straw cup. He's had juice(s) and whatnot but we rarely give him these. He's beginning to use a plate at meals without throwing it (and all his food) on the floor. He'll hold a spoon or fork but doesn't really get how to use it yet.

Sleep: He started STTN shortly after summer break started (around 15mo old), which also coincided with dropping the bedtime bottle. But--it also was around the time he got to sleep in as late as he wanted and not be woken up at 615 every morning. Throughout the summer he was sleep from about 8-8 (or 830-830, 9-9 etc) with 1-2 naps a day. He would either do one long 2.5-3 hour nap midday or two shorter naps (and somedays when mama was particular flexible he'd go down for nap waaay later than he should and stay up late!). Now that we're back in the work schedule/daycare schedule, he's been taking two naps (about 1.5 and 2 hours respectively) that I expect would be longer if he had his way but when you're not the only kid around, sleeping through "lunchtime" doesn't exactly work. We've been working hard to try to get him down for bed around 730, as we learned how important getting close to 12 hours seemed to be to him sleeping without waking up (and can I tell you how wonderful that was...after so so so long of him still waking up for paci's etc every night). He's beginning to get cranky around 7 so maybe we need to start earlier...it's just hard when we're gone all day. But, we're only one week in, so we'll see how things adjust. He sleeps with two paci's (one in the mouth, one backup), his monkey blanket and a small plush care bear (which he ADORES and lays there rubbing it's little hard heart nose and "butt" heart). He is only using the paci at sleeptimes or occasionally when we're out and he's really tired. We read Goodnight Moon everynight, snuggle and lay him down. Sometimes he falls right asleep, other times he lays and plays for awhile quietly with his Care Bear (yes, we broke down and got the video monitor...another post!).
Words: The child is a word fiend! He may have been slow to do everything gross motor but he is verbal! He's very big into labeling things---saying "ehh?" and pointing to pictures in books and things he wants to know what they are. He's really big into those "First 100 words/animals/random pictures" books. He is mimicking like crazy (time to start watching my mouth!!). Below is a list of words he can say (starred are the ones that probably are only understood to us). And yes, I'm typing them how you can read them and not in babyspeak!
  • mama, dada, buca (dog's name)
  • clock, chair, blanket
  • monkey, elephant* (ella), doggie, fish*, tiger, cat*, bunny* (bunn)
  • baa, maaa, neigh, woof (though he can point to a BUNCH more animals when asked, including some weird ones like kangaroo and octopus)
  • bus, car, up, go, help* (elpa)
  • ball, basketball*, bike* (bite)
  • dinner* (dinn), banana, strawberry* (berry), snack* (nack), more* (nana)
  • star, heart
  • hot, hop* (ho)
  • nono, uh-uh, yes* (es), yaya
  • gentle* (nenle)
  • Several names of kids at daycare
  • Open, on, off*
  • Clean up* (keen up)
  • All gone, all done
  • Eye, nose* (noz), mouth* (mof), arm, hand* (han) but can also ID head, hair and ears through pointing.
There are more---I just can't think of them. Obviously, we're very verbal, just missing a lot of sounds still (though totally developmentally appropriate). I love my little talker!
Favorites: books, books, books! Balls, climbing on EVERYTHING (seriously, we had to move the kitchen chairs outside of the gate because I got tired of hauling him off the table), dancing and we're starting to get into puzzles.
Super cool things: I love how much he "knows" and can show...even if not say. I love that he can identify pictures of things in books, go get something when we tell him what it's by and that he's starting to make his wants known (go dada)
Non-super cool things: He LOVES to not listen....say nono about something and do it anyway...look at you and smile that "naughty" smile and proceed to do something scary/heartstopping. The hitting is almost totally gone but biting has reappeared with the appearance of the SEVEN new teeth he sprouted this summer. I think it's our "teacher karma" to have a kid this stubborn :-)
Newest milestones: Spinning around in circles when dancing, somersaults and labeling all the no-nos in the house (not that he listens to them!) He also will carry his clothes to the laundry basket when asked.
Gross Motor: Walking up a storm--fast too! He still monkey crawls occasionally (though we're discouraging it after the PT mentioned that it probably contributed to his neck muscle development turning into torticollis) and pushing for him to crawl on knees. He's still really unsteady (maybe the speed?) but brave as all get out. He climbs stairs (up and down) easily--though not unattended. He walked across the (fenced) backyard the other day to get to his slide (usually he would just stay at the bottom of the steps) and didn't even look back to see if I was going to follow him. He can climb EVERYTHING and is trying to get the child-locks off.  He can also turn off the light switches when given a chance.

Basically---little man is rockin the changes every day. It's crazy and somedays I just can't handle how fast he's growing. I know things are about to change around here and it's scary how I'll have to divide my love and attention. I love him to pieces (even though he's naughty these days!) and can't wait to see him grow more!

MIA

So I apologize for disappearing for awhile...we had an unfortunate incident with trying to switch our high speed internet and (though they swore it would be a seamless transition), we ended up internet-less for NINE days!!!! It was a wholly frustrating situation---with me calling technical support daily and wrangling/arguing/cajoling/subtly threatening customer service agents, tier 2 folks and finally supervisors. There were "problems" with our lines somewhere outside the house but no one seemed to be able to tell me why/what the problem was.....not the best situation with my hormones OUT.OF.CONTROL. But, finally, I got high enough up that I got someone to send out someone with a brain and got nearly a whole month's bill refunded.  AHHHH internet, I missed you.

Things have been pretty busy despite that---we visited family for the 4th of July (melted melted melted in the heat a parade) and have been busy with appt's etc.

Friday the 13th reared it's ugly head yesterday...I received a call saying I had failed my 1hr glucose test. I came back borderline (with a 131 at a 135 cutoff) so they're having me do the 3hr anyway. Not sure why really? Perhaps it was the slight mental breakdown I had at the appointment about how I swear I'm not big enough and she's not going to have enough room and come out with a crooked neck too (not even likely according to my OB). At the time, it earned me a u/s in two weeks at my next visit. But, I've also only gained around 17/18 lbs...coming in inconsistent bursts so perhaps that's what it is. I passed last time so I wasn't expecting it this time. I'm not looking forward to fasting for 12 hours and then sitting for 3hrs.

Especially next week---when we have LM's Pediatric Ophthalmology appt Monday morning, I have a work prof devel Tuesday morning, now the 3hr test Wednesday morning with LM's PT appt Wednesday afternoon and FINALLY a meeting with our personnel department to discuss our maternity/paternity leave on Thursday morning. It's shaping up to be a crazy week.

I'm looking forward to the PO and PT appts. I'm hoping that LM's eyes check out fine--it would be nice to eliminate it as a cause of the torticollis.  At our PT eval 3 weeks ago, we were given some exercises to work on and told that it seems like a really mild case that hopefully would clear up fairly easily. His neck was pretty straight the next week or so, so we were feeling hopeful. But--now his head is leaning to the left...and though TH swears it was that side before, I know it was leaning to the right. So, no idea. He is cutting 7 teeth right now and I've heard that the pressure can make it worse...but switch??

Anyway---the 13th--was capped off with getting a call that LM was throwing up at daycare yesterday (while we were out running errands etc). He spent the rest of the pm sleeping wrapped up in a towel on the floor, waking up only to throw up and then sleep some more.  Finally, around 7pm, he woke up, threw up, snuggled into my lap and said "all done all done" and hasn't thrown up since. We've gotten some fluids and crackers into him so hopefully we've turned the corner. He was Captain Fussy this morning so hopefully he'll feel better after the nap he's taking now...I think we'll try some soup for lunch.

So...that's where we are in all of the big things. We've got two more full weeks of summer vacation left....then back to the grind. Though, one of those weeks I'll need to be working in my room. Ugh. Where did the summer go??

14 Months and 17 weeks

This will serve as a dual purpose post because...well....of course it's been well-proven that I'm a crappy updater :-)

LM is 14 months old...how'd we get here SO quickly!!!?!!? He's still not "walking walking". He takes series of steps (6-7) and then either tips over from trying to go too quickly or gives up and goes back to crawling. Of course, as the video below shows, why walk when it's much quicker to crawl?

He's eating up a storm...still a HUGE fan of lunch meat (turkey, salami, ham), cheese and strawberries. He eats most fruits but adores strawberries. He's beginning to insist on trying more and more of our food so I think he's expanding his world :-)  He's FINALLY drinking enough milk--up to 24oz in a day! After our battle to get going, it's amazing what the right sippy (N.uby Grip n Sip) will do. It's messier than the no-spill ones but he love love loves it. He still has a morning bottle and bedtime bottle (5oz) but we're about to drop the morning bottle. There's three more weeks until summer break and I'd like this transition to occur at daycare so that it happens during a structured, routine situation that he's used to. Our weekends are much more lax (especially with him sleeping in and changing his nap schedule) so I know that we'll be worse in the summer! Dropping his post-lunchtime bottle was nearly drama-less and we did it at daycare so hopefully it'll be the same. I'm a big nervous because he's not a big breakfast eater but I know he gets enough milk and nutrients so the bottle is just extra. I DO NOT have plans to drop the bedtime bottle until I don't have to work during the summer. I know it'll affect his sleep and we're finally getting back on track so I'm not messing with sleep!!! We'll try more brave attempts once summer gets going and I'm "caught up" (haha, over a years worth) of sleep!

He's playing up a storm---loves his books still. He's starting to "read" them to himself but he LOVES to pull them over to me and climb in my lap to be read to when he's sleepy. He's started climbing EVERYTHING....kitchen chairs, the stove, ottomans, baby gates, stairs etc....and won't climb down the correct way...only head first! This child knows no fear!!!

He's still pretty verbal--adding hot, danger, some random daycare names, basketball, monkey and duck to his mix. He sings (gibberish), rolls it up and claps when he hears music. He also dances to music!

We're still fighting the skin issues too...eczema will be the death of me. We just can't seem to get it under control---we take get it to go away, just not stay away. I'm not sure what to do next...I just don't want to go to steroid creams. I tried a new lotion (Neo.sporin Eczema) and it helps some, but we're going through it pretty quick and it's expensive so I may try something new next (we've already done aqua.phor, aveeno, renew etc).

Well...there's not much time left for a PS update....naptime is almost over. I'm getting bigger...50/50 maternity pants/regular pants. Most of my shirts still fit though. I find out what we're having on the 16th....eeek!! Still no real feeling what we're having...I feel the same except for a tiny bit of acne and more headaches (though I haven't been as good with the water as the first time) so it's probably going to swing boy.

Here, mostly.

Sorry for being so MIA.

LM is still not sleeping well at night....our best night in the last two weeks was him only waking up 2x. Well...last night he sttn but that has been the crazy fluke---and he didn't get an afternoon nap. I'm not sure what made it happen, but he slept 12 hours through. I'm hoping that it doesn't have to do with sleeping in until 830 the morning before...because we've got five more weeks of work before that can happen on a regular basis. And by then, I may have to be committed. The ever-so-anticipated 2nd tri energy boost has yet to arrive....I'm 15wk+1....surely it will get here soon! So, in the long-winded manner in which I arrived here, I've been exhausted and crashing to bed right after LM so I've been spending very little special time with my laptop. I've been keeping up with all of you on google reader...but it SUCKS to comment on. Unless there's a special way I haven't figured out besides opening each blog in the browser.  So, I'm here...and I'm keeping up with you :-) I promise.

Things are about the same here...LM is oh so close to walking (sleep regression?). He loves to monkey crawl to where he's going and stop a few feet short, stand up and wobble a few steps to his destination. He's strung together about 5 steps before toppling over. He's got the drive--just not the balance! He's got two new teeth (front, bottoms) and has been imitating a lot of words. He'll say "ot" (hot) and "dngr" (danger) while climbing the stove, he says "doki" (doggie) and crawls to his high chair when he wants to eat. He's also started crawling over to the kitchen cabinets where his bottles are kept and banging/crying when he wants his bedtime bottle. We've dropped his bottles down to 2 5oz'ers (one right before the am nap and bedtime). He did unexpectedly well at dropping the post-lunchtime bottle this past week so I'm hoping the early one goes well too. I'm just hesitant about dropping it as he doesn't really eat much for breakfast---mostly fruit and cheerios. Sometimes he'll do a thing of yogurt but overall, he's not much in to protein for breakfast---a few bites of eggs etc before refusing. So, I'm not sure if it's good to drop it yet. Any experiences with this? He's still hitting/biting etc for no real reason...and of course everything I read talks about what to do when they're doing it out of frustration (either because they don't get their way or can't express themselves) and that doesn't seem to be our case. He's really big on our reactions right now to LOTS of things but it's hard to just ignore things like hitting to get them to stop. All these things aside though...he's still this amazing little creature who amazes me daily with his actions---you should see him rolling a ball with his feet/hands up in the air--all the balance of a seal, my boy!! He's recently discovered his fine motor abilities and is rocking his gear toys and trying out a couple of puzzles.

Pumpkin Seed is still with us and growing well (well...based off my growing bump!). At my Ob appt this week, there was a strong heartbeat (quickly found too...phew!) and my blood pressure was good. I've lost pound...even though I'm eating like crazy. But, I tend to have this little person who likes to eat off my plate so perhaps my portions aren't what I think they are. That and running after him and a class of children may be having me burn more calories than expected. Either way--she told me to eat more....yes ma'am!! I went in to the appointment ready to beg for a 20wk u/s appointment for the "big" u/s since my next two appts. are 18wks and 22wks. Since I'll be out of town on vacation (oh please go better than last years) during week 22, I really was hoping she'd let me come in earlier (around 20wks) so I didn't have to wait until 23wks. But--because she rocks, as soon as she looked at the calendar (ok...I assume she looked at the calendar. It's all on her laptop but I imagine it was a calendar), she said ooh next appointment is u/s time! Yay!!! I'm super excited for getting to find out what we're having in just 4weeks!!!! I really thought I'd end up waiting until the end of May or worse, June. Though I haven't really given it too much thought yet--I need to research some more old wives tales in my ample free time to see how things are going compared to LM's---I'm going boy. This pregnancy has just seemed really really similar to LM's, except for a couple of things. But--that's another post :-)

That's all for now....I've got 5weeks left of school (the kiddos and I are both ready for summer vacation) and a ton to do. So, I better go get going while LM is napping.

Thanks for still reading!

Gumballs and stuff

I've got several bits of things that I want to share with you all, and I've been trying to find time to get them all in their own posts....but.....it's not happening. So, I will be giving you a bit of a "gumballs in a machine" post. A little variety to spice up your Thursday night.

  • Aggressive Much?
Little Monkey has always had a bit of a temper. But, it's usually housed itself in the form of opinions and squawks when he doesn't get what he wants at the correct speed. However, lately, he's started hitting. He does it for various reasons---when he's mad, tired, just because. There seems to be no rhyme or reason. Usually it's TH or myself that are the recipients of it...and it's usually when he's on our laps or being held. He doesn't seek us out just to hit, but rather does it as a reaction to something.

We've tried saying "no" "no hits" etc in our firm teacher voices. We've tried putting him down immediately after saying it. We've also tried ignoring it. However, the result of most of these is him smiling and laughing at us. I've got no idea on how to work this out....I lack the proper time for research. At least he's not really doing it at daycare. (knock on wood!).

Oh...and he's also started biting. Not out of anger, just crawling up and biting various body parts. But, he's also doing it to furniture, his fingers, toys etc so I assume it's related to teething. Though, our efforts to share with him that this isn't ok aren't any more successful than the hitting.

Is he just too young to get it? Or has he already decided he doesn't respect us and will be "that kid" in society?

  • Climbing
LM has taken to climbing. Now--our house is pretty much as baby-proofed as we can make it (with the exception of a couple corner guards and drawer latches in rooms he doesn't go in). However, it appears that the little man loves to climb. He's been trying to climb his baby gates--finding minute success with the cheap one we've been throwing up in the back sliding door to let in fresh air in this AWESOME March weather. I hadn't really worried much about it since he isn't tall enough to climb up on the furniture and the stairs are gated at top and bottom.
But then...because he loves to mess with me....he started doing this...

yeah....he uses the cooktop as a drum.

  • Dreams
The pregnancy dreams are out of control.....why didn't someone remind me about these??? I had forgotten what it's like to dream constantly ALL NIGHT LONG. It's exhausting. But--worse than that, I'm starting to wake up mid-dream and not realize it. I've woken TH up twice this week talking about things in my dream....including telling him to turn on the light because LM's hands were sticky and I needed to clean them off. I also whacked him good during one dream because I was dreaming he was falling off a cliff and I was "saving him". Yeah....he didn't appreciate my efforts :-) I've also been dreaming about work a lot---my favorite was parents calling to yell at me about RIDICULOUS things (although...that does happen in real life). My goodness...so tired. Luckily, LM is sleeping better at night, most nights not waking up (once he goes to sleep!).  I can't remember if this gets better or did I just get used to the dreams?
  • Coming out
We've come out about the pregnancy to our parents (ok..not my dad yet but I've got this master plan about a Big Brother shirt but LM WILL NOT smile/look at the camera/not move suddenly while wearing the shirt). But--after spring break next week, it's time to come out at work. I'll be 12 weeks this weekend and I'm ready (though I'll probably make sure I can hear the HB on the doppler). I'm not as excited about sharing the news at work this time....I'm not sure that my maternity leave has faded from their minds (there was some drama because my team is a bit dysfunctional without me there...no..seriously...I mean it. They just had a convo in front of me this week about I can't have another baby because there's too much drama when I'm not around to keep people in line....awkward.)

So....we'll see how it goes. Part of my lack of excitement probably stems from the emotional disconnect that I'm still feeling with PS. I'm hoping this gets better...I feel a bit in a funk about it. Pre-Post Partum Depression anyone? Maybe I'm just burnt out about work and need a break to just relax.

So, those are my updates. I swear I'm going to work on posting more. I just can't seem to find the time/energy after LM goes to bed. I read everything on my phone...it's just a POS and going from Google Reader to the browser to comment screws up too much. I wish I could do it directly. Someday. Someday.
