The last few weeks have been full of transitions....back to work, back to daycare, new routines, new struggles.
Work has been hard--my kiddos learned a lot of bad habits while I was gone and I've got some pretty severe behavior problems to fix. On top of being behind curriculum and learning-wise....it's been hard to play catch-up. I also found out that one of my co-workers has breast cancer. So...work has been a lot of work. I'm exhausted by the time I get home....from working all day long after a night of interrupted sleep (she's up at least once a night).
LM is struggling in daycare. It's been hard for him to get back into the routine of daycare...especially with having to share her with his baby. He's been aggressive again..hitting, scratching, kicking. And, not listening...a lot. He was struggling with napping (she was trying to get him to lay on a mat for naptime so PS could use the pnp--not that she naps in it anyway!) and we had one horrible blow-up day last week where she spanked him (apparently it was a swat more than anything) but it got pretty ugly between us. We have arrived at an ok place right now but this is my final incident with her. If anything else comes up, I'm done. I know she's really frustrated with his behavior...but he's not even two yet and just doesn't get it yet. He will learn and he will get it..but it will take time. Sometimes I think his verbal skills make people (us included) assume that he understands/processes more than he can. I'm hoping that he'll get into the routine again and be ok. But, I'm looking into new places just in case. Beyond that, he's doing great--singing, dancing, talking up a storm! I can't believe he's almost two!!!
PS added to the stress of the week by having a new breakout of hives that got progressively worse as the week went on. So, to throw a big transition in---I'm stopped breastfeeding entirely. Obviously, there is more that she's allergic to and I can't eliminate everything from my diet. I also couldn't continue to deal emotionally with the idea that I'm hurting her with what I eat...without knowing. So, I ended that chapter of my life. It's been highly emotional for me (not to mention painful as the not feeding engorgement set in) but I'm trying to make the best out of it. I know that it'll be better for her to have a controlled diet that we can help her feel better with. Today I'm having a glass of wine without having to time it around feeds and see the positive in it. We ended up at the pediatrician's office on Friday to have her looked at. She confirmed that it's not a contact rash but a classic "food" related rash. She wants us to go back to the hypoallergenic formula (as you remember--she hated it the first time and REFUSED to drink anything out of a bottle for awhile so we went for soy to see if she'd take it). She wasn't sure if it was a reaction to the soy that had been building in her system or something else (corn maybe?). We're weaning her off the soy by mixing the two formulas until she'll take the hypo one. She's been doing okay with it so far. Of course, I'm sure I just jinxed us! We go back to the pedi allergist in June unless she continues with hives after being on the hypo formula full time for awhile. We also have steroid cream for her body and a liquid for her head (yup--it's there too) to get the hives/rash to go away before it harms her skin---it's seriously bad looking folks. I'm hoping that once we get it cleared and on the new formula, it'll make a difference in how she feels. What I'm not looking forward to though, is the cost of it. Retail, we're looking at 35$ every 5 days...and she only takes 4oz bottles right now. When I'm done with this, I'm going to be doing some research on buying through Ebay, CL etc.
It's been a lot lately. I feel like I'm unraveling emotionally...but just don't have time to actually do it. I'm sub-par at a lot of things...and great at nothing. I just want to be good at something...I don't need great yet. Oh, and I'd like someone to come wash my bottles every night :-)

From here to there...
It's hard for me to figure out what to write these days. LM is
growing and changing like crazy. I'm filled with millions of updates I
want to share with you---like how he started bringing us books to read
him. He's always loved books and loves being read to but this is the
first time he's started crawling to us (angrily usually, as he hasn't
quite got the crawling with big objects thing down yet) to have them
read to him. But--my mind is consumed with this pregnancy. The paranoia
of not having a beta, the paranoia that comes with the faint faint
spotting that happened for a bit today (old, brown spotting, not the
scary red, fresh kind) and all of the other things running through my
mind a million times a day.
I struggle to have the energy these days to make it through the day...let alone even get on my computer if this last week was any indication. Between work, playing with LM non-stop after coming home, dinner, life and then 1st tri exhaustion, I know it's going to be hard to update the blog as much as I want to. And I do want to--not only is it cathartic, but I love the chronology of it. With this in mind, it makes it even more difficult to decide what to post about. This place started as a parenting after IF space...a nook in the world for me to share my thoughts, fears and experiences---both to have a place to say the things that I have no one else to say them too AND on the off chance that someone stumbles upon it and happened to read the one thing they needed to hear when their baby WILL not sleep like everyone elses and they're losing their mind (have I mentioned that we're not going to sleep well and waking up crying at night again??).
I need to find a way to strike a balance between chronicling this pregnancy (which I wish I had done with LM) and still giving LM his share in the spotlight. I'm not sure how this is done....and maybe I'll get better about posting more.
But, let's try.
I'm 7w pregnant today....exhausted, vaguely nauseous when I don't get enough protein/get hungry, cold ALL the time and still trying to wrap my brain around this scary/crazy/exciting journey we've detoured down.
LM turns 1 (ONE, did you read that!!????) a week from tomorrow. We're planning his party (next Sunday) and existing in a state of shock that we're here already. I'm crushed that I'll be at work on his actual birthday. It makes me cry to think about it. But, since I'm taking a 1/2 day later in the week for his pedi appt and then another 1/2 day the next week for my u/s and dr appt, I really can't. I even thought about seeing if someone could cover my room for 45 min or so and then I'd stay at daycare with him until his birth time. But--I don't see it happening. I can't believe this year has flown by---how did it happen??
I read a statistic in a magazine today about how many Saturdays you get with your child between birth and then leaving for college---it was somewhere in the 900's but I hate the idea that so many of them are gone. Bleh. Too many hormones to think about this.
That's my update for today....I hope I will be better this week about sharing all of the thoughts bouncing around in my head.

*squints*
Ick. It's early...and I've already been up since 515.
Today starts our first teacher contract day...though technically, I'm still not being paid from maternity leave extension (thank goodness for pro-rated paychecks!).
I feel like the walking dead. After five months of sleep deprivation, no one told me I would have to make coordinated movements--such as makeup--this early. I'm totally down with blearily nursing while surfing the smartphone at this hour...but looking like a human. Yikes.
The real question is...what is LM doing to do when he has to be "gotten up" soon? Will he be a morning person like TH? Or grouchily stay awake up he can fall back asleep like me?
Ugh. I wish we had more money...or less bills/loans/national debt.

TH: The Parenting Expert
A while back I talked about our attempt at un-swaddling....our failure rather. I had big plans on how we'd try again. We'd start out by leaving his arms out at night for a few nights, then do the same for naps. Then, we'd totally un-swaddle at night for a few rough nights, then add in naps too.
FYI--I chose night first over naps because if he gets good naps, then he naturally sleeps better at night. So I figured it would be best to start at nights....though, what do I know? I just make this stuff up as I go along :-)
Anyway--I went out to a Wine & Canvas night with my BFF last night and TH had bedtime duty. Normally, this is my realm because LM tends to fall asleep during/immediately after his last nursing session, so I put him to bed. This was his first time to handle it. I left him bottles and had the swaddle sack all laid out for him. While I was out, I get a picture on my phone of LM rocking some new super cute sleeper pj's that we bought him. I remarked on how cute he looked and because I was engrossed in my painting (oh...and I had some wine!) I didn't pay attention to what time it was.
Well...long story kinda short.....TH decided that he was just going to put LM to bed unswaddled last night. Because...and I quote...."I wanted him to wear the new pj's". (Normally he just wears a little onesie under his sleep sack because it gets hot). So, my new parenting expert husband clearly used all of the research and knowledge he has to make this decision (Can you hear the sarcasm?).
It didn't go horribly. Ok, yes it did. He was up to eat 2 or 3 times (I'm so tired I honestly don't remember how many times..is that bad?) and once or twice for just some patting/paci/soothing. By the end, the last time I patted him, he did flop out right back to sleep so I guess he liked it. But...I feel so groggy today. The one time that TH went into soothe him turned out to be the time that he really needed/wanted to eat.
So, like all best laid plans, we're on a different course now. I'm willing to give it a few nights to see how it works. He is a few weeks older and has discovered the love of sucking on his fingers and playing with his feet since last time, so maybe it'll work. But...damn...I had gotten used to getting up once for a feed at night.
Besides...I wouldn't want TH to not get to put all the cute sleepers on LM and ruin the parenting study he's doing :-)

Winding down...
I know that people have strong opinions on the whole issue of breastfeeding, formula, weaning etc. Please know that I believe to each his own.
I enjoy breastfeeding LM. It's been a really smooth process amazingly....I was sure there'd be problems. But--he latched right on and never looked back. It's always been my plan that I would transition him to formula when it was time for school to start up. Yes, I know I could pump. But the age group I teach is high maintenance and requires a lot of energy and time at the start of the school year. Most years, the first week of school usually results in me grabbing a quick snack while running around on my one break of the day (we don't get a second prep until later in the year when we feel the kids are more self-sufficient for not all of the teachers to be there). I don't sit down and honestly, there's just not going to be time to pump on the one break. I'm trying to be realistic. The last thing I want is for LM to be relying on pumped breastmilk (my freezer stash is pathetic---I can only pump about 3oz at a time, on a good day) at daycare and my supply tank. I have panic attacks at the thought of leaving him at daycare after so long home together, so I cannot imagine trying to transition to formula in the midst of all of that.
He'll be 5 months three days before school starts. We plan to start solids at 6 months. (I totally get that this statement doesn't fit here...but I wanted to include it and couldn't figure out a good spot for it).
Once things settle down at school, I'll still have just the one late morning break. And I could pump...but honestly---this is my one time a day to sit and talk with my team, get things done etc...and I know how stressed I get when I lose this. I don't want to be a stressed, mean teacher...and as a result, a cranky mommy. I get that some people might view this as selfish....and it probably is. But, it's something I've been really really thinking about and I feel comfortable with my decision.
Guilty, but comfortable.
I'll miss the time with LM but he loves bottles and will take them from me, so hopefully we'll still get our snuggle time. Plus, it'll help TH and him get some much needed snuggle time as he'll be back to school too.
So right now, I'm exploring the idea of weaning (without feeling like my bo.obs will explode) and learning about formula/bottles etc. It's a lot to learn about....and I feel a little overwhelmed. I'm the kind of person who doesn't like not being "good" at something right away so I have anxiety about the transition. I'd love advice from anyone who has weaned (un)successfully and anyone who can give me tips about formula/bottle and all of the life lessons you've learned.
We go to the pedi next week for our 4 month so I'll talk with her about it then and get her advice too. But--you know I love the real mama advice.
So we'll start soon....but until then, I'm just going to enjoy my time breastfeeding LM and prepare ourselves for this new transition. And boy..it's a big one.

Monkey meet crib....
LM naps in his crib once a day (usually)...it's all part of my big "plan" for a transition to crib sleeping at night. But, TH and I have been talking about putting him in the crib when he falls asleep after his 8-9 feed. Usually after feeding sometime in this hour, he falls asleep after nursing instead of wanting to "play". Normally, he snuggles with us or in his swing during this time and then he eats one more time before heading up to sleep in our room.
But--since this fall asleep time has become more consistent, we figured he could sleep in his crib until we go to bed. But...last night he didn't wake up again until midnight. So, I fed him in his room and put him back down. He slept there until 4, ate again and slept until 7. Not exactly our best stretches but I suppose that's okay considering it's all new and different.
It was really hard to leave him in there last night. I missed hearing him breathe, grunt and stir right next to my head. I had to just have faith he was breathing instead of being able to open my eyes and peek at him. I probably slept worse than him!! But--it's a step in the right direction. He'll be 3 months old this week and I suppose the time has come to start with bedtime routines. I don't expect we'll perfect anything until he's closer to 4 months but hopefully it's all a step in the right direction to start STTN.
My little guy is growing up.

Can I tell you a secret?
Shh...don't tell anyone...especially TH.
I don't want to go back to work in August. I want to stay home with LM and be a stay at home mom. I never thought I would want that. I LOVE my job--it's truly my dream job. Not only do I get to teach the age group I want but I get to be challenged and have leadership roles (a type A dream!).
But, I can't imagine leaving my little guy. Maybe it's that I've been home since late February (bedrest) and haven't really had contact with school or my kiddos. Maybe it's just that I'm watching LM sleep right now and I can't imagine missing any moment with him.
I'm not a domestic person---I'm a truly uninspired cook. I'm "okay" at housekeeping. I'm def not that fun, organized, patient, creative Mom. So, having my "job" be being in charge of the house and LM isn't exactly something I would excel at. But, it's how I'm feeling right now.
TH has no idea that I'm even considering this. He knows how I feel about my job and how much I enjoy it---and more importantly....that we cannot afford for me to stay home. We both just finished grad school (Can we say student loans!?!) and just finished working on some house remodeling. As I don't know where this is going....I'm not planning on telling him....yet.
I need time to think and weigh it all. I'm going into work to visit and show off LM tomorrow. I may just be reinspired once I get there. This may all pass.
Or...I may have a lot to think about over the summer.

Not the outdoorsey type I see...
I do not like cold weather---it makes me crabby. Especially when it is accompanied by grey skies and clouds. Bleh.
The first "warm" day (in all fairness, it's usually 48 degrees and sunny but still!) my mood picks up, I crack the car windows and bask in the sunshine (even if I'm still wearing bulky winter clothes). While I know LM can't be out in the sun this summer (boo not being allowed to use sunblock until six months!) but that doesn't mean we still can't stroll in the park, hike in the woods, go camping, go places that are not climate controlled.
Or does it?
The last couple of days it has warmed back up (the 80's sure feel nice after frost...seriously.. frost in May..dislike) and we had the windows open and were enjoying the nice weather before the summer heat kicks in. I love sleeping with the windows open and the breeze blowing by.
But LM apparently does not. He's become crabbier and crabbier..melting down in his stroller, waking up cranky at night for no reason and just in general being restless and unhappy. So, we've closed the windows, turned on the AC and hung out inside.
But is this a glimpse into the future that is my summer? With both of us as teachers, we love our summers off and make the most of them. I don't want a miserable LM but I don't want to be cooped up inside. I'm hoping this is something that he adjusts to. I totally get that humidity is a crazy, icky feeling...especially if it's brand new. I'm not sure how this will all work itself out but until it does, I guess we'll be using our numerous carriers and lovely stroller inside.
Hmmm...not quite how I pictured it. I'll just add it to my list of things I didn't expect about motherhood.

Eight more weekdays..
TH has eight more school days left until summer break starts. I'll admit...it's weird to not be counting it down with all of the other teachers--I'm in this weird place where time isn't really time and every day is sorta the same.
That said--in eight more days, I get TH home with us every day until *gulp* we both go back to work in August. I'm looking forward to having another pair of hands for holding and diaper changes. And, I'm REALLY looking forward to the two of them getting the bonding time that LM and I have all day now. LM is changing and growing at such an amazing rate right now and it's going to be a great summer together.
However....I'll admit, I'm a bit nervous about it all. We've got our little "routines" down during the day. Things always get a little thrown off on the weekends when TH is home. LM and I play, hangout and in general, have our own way about things. It'll be weird having that all change....and I'm sure it'll mess with his nighttime sleep schedule. Of course, getting up every two hours like we did last night really can't get much worse :-)
I'm sure it will be great for all three of us to be together....and I'm sure there will be days when I'm ready to wring TH's neck :-)
That said--in eight more days, I get TH home with us every day until *gulp* we both go back to work in August. I'm looking forward to having another pair of hands for holding and diaper changes. And, I'm REALLY looking forward to the two of them getting the bonding time that LM and I have all day now.
